Room of the Rescue of the Inca Atahualpa
The historical monument known as the ‘Rescue Room’ is an Inca construction located in the district, province, department and region of Cajamarca. This place is famous because, according to history, it was the place where the last Inca emperor, Atahualpa, was imprisoned by the Spanish conquistadors led by Francisco Pizarro in 1532.
The room is approximately 6 metres long, 4.5 metres wide and 3 metres high, these were the dimensions that Atahualpa had indicated he would fill with gold up to a line drawn at the height of his outstretched arm.
According to the chronicles, the Inca Atahualpa, seeing himself a prisoner of the Hispanic men, promised Pizarro to fill that room – as far as the Inca’s (raised) hand could reach – with gold (once) and twice with silver, in exchange for his release. The Spaniards, led by Pizarro, accepted and Atahualpa’s request for the transport of the metals was made immediately; but once the amount of the Inca’s ransom was paid, he was accused of idolatry, of not wanting to reveal the location of the Inca treasure, among other things; accusations that would lead to his execution in the city’s main square. It is said that in current calculations the amount of the ransom would have been the most expensive paid to date and would reach a total of more than 5 million pounds sterling.
Characteristics of the Inca Atahualpa’s Ransom Room
In its structure we can appreciate the presence of stones (of volcanic material) of polygonal shape that have been worked in such a way that, as in most of the Inca constructions, they fit perfectly one on top of the other thanks to their angles, being difficult and even impossible to cross a single hair through them; the walls that are formed by these stones are slightly inclined, thus giving the room a trapezoidal shape.
It is believed that the Cuarto del Rescate would have belonged in ancient times to an Inca temple, which would have been destroyed during the Hispanic presence. In this room there is also the presence of a stone channel that would have once served for the circulation of water.
